An overview of St George’s University, Grenada

St George’s University was first established as St George’s University School of Medicine in 1976. In 1996, they founded the School of Arts and Science and a Veterinary school in 1999.

Over 14 000 physicians have graduated from St George’s University and is now practising in over 50 countries. St George’s is also affiliated with over 70 hospitals and clinics across the USA, Canada, UK and Grenada where Medical students undertake their final 2 years of study.

St George’s University is in the capital centre of Grenada and is close to everything.

Students can dine in casual restaurants to fancier restaurants. They can hike and swim in waterfalls nearby, as well as exploring the local bushland for their unique flora and fauna. St George’s University, Grenada offers a Doctor of Medicine Program that ranges from 4 years to 7 years depending on entry qualifications. St George’s, Grenada’s Medical degree allow their students to have an international opportunity to practice medicine as it is accredited and approved by:

  • Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP)

Students studying MD will be assigned to 1 of the 9 different Colleges where they will undertake their studies. These colleges are tight-knit learning communities where students support and help each other:

Academic Entry Requirements: 

For North American students:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university

For Non-US/Canadian Applicants:

  • AND English Test (if it is not their principle language):
    • IELTS: 7.0 on each band
    • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based) or 100 (internet-based)

    • 1 year General Biology or Zoology with lab
    • 1 year Inorganic Chemistry (General or Physical) with lab
    • 1 year Organic Chemistry with lab
    • 1 semester Physics with lab
    • 1 semester Math:
      • Calculus, Computer Science, or Statistics
    • 1 semester of English
  • Students are recommended to take these courses:
    • 1 additional semester of Physics (one year in total)
    • 2 semesters in social science courses:
      • Psychology, Sociology…
    • Courses in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Physiology

For Non-US/Canadian Applicants:

  • Strong science background

 

Entry Requirements: 

St George’s University, Grenada accepts students based on their academic results, UCAT/MCAT results and their demonstration of their non-academic achievements and work experience in the interviews.

UCAT:

UCAT is not mandatory for all students. St George’s suggests that International students should sit the UCAT exam to provide additional information quantitative information additional to their academic achievements.

Work Experience:

St George’s Grenada looks for students who are well versed, skilled and motivated to study and perform Medicine. They recommend that students undertake volunteer work or work experience in the health-care setting to demonstrate this. Doing this also ensures adequate exposure to the Medical profession.

  • Students are required to achieve the minimum academic standards covered above
  • Students must have basic computer knowledge
  • Students must also complete the MCAT and submit their scores

A select number of students are invited to an interview based on their academic achievements and MCAT/UCAT results.

  • Criteria: The interview section assesses students’ interpersonal skills, including compassion, flexibility, empathy and perceptiveness. Students also need to demonstrate interest and motivation to study and perform medicine and their familiarity with ethical questions that they will be facing. St George’s narrowed down the main criteria to:

    • Motor skills
    • Intellectual-Conceptual, Integrative and Quantitive abilities
    • Behavioural and Social Attributes
  • Structure: St George’s interview is structured into a one session interview.
