Overview of the Imperial College London

Imperial College London is a public research university that used to be a part of the University of London, but has since become independent. The university is known for its excellence in science, technology, medicine and business.

Their main campus is in South Kensington and these are three student halls within a 5-minute walking distance: Beit Hall, Eastside Halls and Southside Halls.  The rent covers utility bills, internet access, cleaning, maintenance and basic contents insurance, and ranges from £179 to £316. All eligible first year students who firmly accept their offer from Imperial College London will be guaranteed a place in these student halls if that complete their accommodation application by the deadline.

Academic requirements:

A-levels:

  • Minimum: AAA overall, including an A in Biology and Chemistry.
  • Typical: 80% of A-level applicants made an offer for 2020 entry scored A*AA (A* in Chemistry or Biology).

IB:

  • Minimum: 38 points overall, including 6 points both in Higher Level Biology and Chemistry.
  • Typical: 80% of IB applicants made an offer for 2020 entry scored 39 points.

Advanced Placements:

  • Minimum: 5 in Biology, Chemistry and a Mathematics or Science subject.

 

Entry Requirements:

UCAT:

  • Applicants are NOT required to sit the UCAT — any UCAT scores will not be used in the selection process.

BMAT:

  • Minimum 2021 entry for home students: Total 10.9 for Section 1 and Section 2 (with minimum 3.5 for each section), and 3C in Section 3.
  • Minimum 2021 entry for overseas or EU students: Total 13.3 for Section 1 and Section 2 (with minimum 4.0 for each section), and 3C in Section 3.

Work experience:

  • Given the COVID-19 climate, there will be no expectation for applicants to have clinical experience. Instead, applicants can draw on their experiences in school or online settings.
  • However, applicants are still required to demonstrate a strong understanding of the healthcare profession and the realities of working in such a field. Here are some online resources that they recommend:

 

Application Process: 

  • Submit your UCAS application by the deadline.
  • Sit the BMAT.
  • If you meet the academic requirements and are competitive enough, you will be invited to an interview.
  • If you are successful after your interview, you will be emailed an offer to study medicine at the Imperial College London.

 

Interview Criteria and Structure: 

  • The interviews are structured as MMIs — Multiple Mini Interviews.
  • The stations will vary from year to year, however, they will cover these main topics:
    • Teamwork and leadership
    • Motivation to study medicine
    • Understanding the role of a doctor
    • Empathy and breaking bad news
    • Ethics scenarios
    • Imperial and your contribution to the school of medicine
    • Resilience
  • For entry in 2022, the interviews will have an asynchronous component and a live component:
    • In the asynchronous component, applicants will respond to an interactive e-module by recording and uploading a video response. Note that you will not be interviewed live by anyone.
    • In the live component, applicants will interact with assessors either online or on campus.
  • You will be marked for the quality of your response (70%) and how you communicate your response (30%).

 

Clinical placement information

Years 1 to 3

The student will go on 3 eight-week clinical placements including one in general practice.

Year 4

Fourth-year students will focus on developing their research skills which will lead to them graduating with a Bachelor of Science.

Year 5 to 6

Students will undertake various clinical placements to learn about a range of medical specialities and complete a dedicated pathology course. They will have the opportunity to pursue electives that interest them.
