Overview of the University of Warwick

The University of Warwick was established in 1961 and accepted its first small intake of 450 students in 1965. Since then, they have expanded into 29 academic departments, with 50 research centers in 3 major faculties and 27 278 students.

In 2000, they opened their new Medical school, which soon became one of the largest Medical Schools in England.

A range of accommodations is available at the University of Warwick, including single rooms, studios, rooms with shared bathrooms and en-suite rooms. Accommodation is available for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Medical students are placed together in specific accommodation at both Tocil Residences and off-campus houses.

The University of Warwick also have over 300 societies and sports clubs including Comic Book Society to French Speaking, to Sustainable Development. They also hold numerous events throughout the year, like Casino nights, Party Bus to Birmingham and movie nights.

University of Warwick Medical Courses that require UCAT

Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery

Academic Requirements:

• An undergraduate degree at a minimum of upper second class honour (2:1) degree in any subject; or
• A Masters/Doctorate

Non-academic Requirements: 

• At least 2 different work experiences adding up to 70 hours in a healthcare setting (NHS preferred)
  • Students need to have direct hands-on care of patients (not family or friends)
• Note: Students do not need to write a Personal Statement
• Note: For 2022 Entry, due to COVID-19, work experience hours can be counted from 15/10/2017 – 15/10/21 (last 4 years)

UCAT:

The University of Warwick ranks students’ UCAT scores to determine those who will receive an invitation to an interview. Although there is no cut-off mark, they usually invite candidates with a minimum score of 2570-2800.

These are the previous years minimum UCAT results:

• Year = score
• 2016 = 2770
• 2017 = 2060 (Outlier because UCAT removed a whole section in 2017)
• 2018 = 2650
• 2019 = 2570

Students’ Verbal Reasoning Scores are used to determine the first round of selection. Students with a Verbal Reasoning Score that is lower than the national mean will be automatically rejected. Students with higher Verbal Reasoning scores will be given more credit in the selection process.

The University of Warwick looks at the total score for Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning and Abstract Reasoning AND they also consider student’s Situational Judgement scores too.

Application Process: 

• Students are required to achieve the minimum academic standards covered above
• Students also need to sit the UCAT exam, achieve high marks and pass the interview
• Students must complete their survey about their work experience
• Students also need to provide the University of Warwick with one reference
• A UCAS application form is to be filled out

Interview Criteria and Structure: 

The University of Warwick invites approximately 450 students to take part in their Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs).

• Criteria: Trained assessors will be observing and scoring each student.The interview assesses students’:

  • Interpersonal and critical thinking skills
  • Teamwork
  • Insight
  • Resilience
  • Communication
  • Empathy
  • Probity
  • Respect and dignity
• Structure:
  • The interview section consists of 6 stations out of the ones listed below.
  • Each station is approximately 10 minutes long

Other options to entry:

• There are no other options to entry.
• Warwick does not accept A Level or GCSE exam results, any deferred entries or transfers from other courses.

Degree facts: 

• Medicine is only offered as a post-graduate course at the University of Warwick
• Warwick usually accepts approximately 180 Home/EU students and up to 13 international students

Clinical placement information

Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery

The first year is mostly taught in a classroom setting, however, from Year 2 students will learn primarily on clinical attachments in acute hospital settings across Coventry, Nuneaton, Rugby and Warwick.
